Correction to Recent ABC News Report

April 17, 2007 — -- Correction -- Earlier this week ABC News broadcast a consumer alert concerning Web sites that resemble the legitimate free online tax preparation and filing service of the Internal Revenue Service but are designed to defraud taxpayers. The IRS online service is available only at the official IRS Web site, IRS.GOV.

Some versions of the ABC story showed portions of a Web site, IRS.COM, which provides information for taxpayers and links to companies that provide online tax services. IRS.COM does not claim to be affiliated with the IRS and says it does not collect any personal information from users of its Web site. Its operator, InterSearch Group, Inc., states that it "is in no way involved in activities that could be construed to mislead or defraud consumers."

ABC News regrets the error.
