— -- Temperatures are running hot at this year’s U.S. Open, causing players like Thanasi Kokkinakis to forfeit their match. But tempers are running high, as well.

There was no love between 23-year-old CoCo Vandeweghe and her tennis racket Wednesday night when she not only lost her cool, but also her match.

The up-and-coming U.S. sensation is making shockwaves on social media, conjuring up images of some of the most epic courtside meltdowns: Andy Roddick’s racket rage; repeat offender, tennis bad boy John McEnroe; Andrew Agassi’s words with a ref at the U.S. Open in 1990; and Serena Williams, who memorably mouthed off to a ref during a match at the Open in 2009.

Earlier this year, the world’s No. 1 tennis player, Novak Djokovic, apologized after his a fiery moment that frightened a young ball boy. Djokovic posted an apology on Facebook.

As for Vandeweghe and her tennis racket tantrum, it didn’t help her in the long run. She still lost her second round match, missing out on an opportunity to face Serena Williams in the next round.

She admitted after the match she was already looking toward that match in her head. She also said she watched the incident several times on television and said shs did it out of nervous energy and pent-up frustration.
