Transcript for Beauty Pageant Contestant Arrested for Insurance Fraud
getting pretty ugly for one beauty queen. She was caught competing in high heels, get this, after alleging to have badly injured a toe to collect workers' comp. ABC's nick watt has the story. Reporter: There she is, miss Toyota long prix wanna-be Shawna palmer. She wasn't just standing on a stage but preening an the stage looking graceful. Reporter: But? But at the same time, she was illegally collecting worker's' comp claims that totaled over $24,000. Reporter: Palmer, 22 of Riverside, California, had been working at a supermarket before claiming she hurt her little toe so bad she couldn't walk or wear shoes. A legitimately injured toe, you know, there may be some complications from that. Reporter: But palmer was apparently entering fashion show, squeezing that apparently injured toe into shes and on the strength of this evidence, she was arrested and thrown in jail. People would laugh and roll their eyes but this is serious. Workers' compensation fraud is a multibillion dollar drain on the economy. Reporter: Remember Kathy Cashwell spinning the we will with verve on "The price is right" while also claiming workers' comp for a shoulder injury? She's on three years probation and had to pay back $30,000. Shawna now faces similar censure. She certainly possessed a certain amount of beauty and had a certain amount of bravado to try to pull off this scam but when it came to the brains department, I think she's a little bit lacking. Reporter: To add insult to an allegedly faked injury, Shawna palmer didn't win other even place. For "Good morning America," nick watt, ABC news, Los Angeles. All right. Thank you, nick. We made several attempts to contact Shawna palmer and her family but got no response.
