Reporter: On tuesday, a significantly more somber merfeld, appeared in court for sentencing. But in a business senior twist, the husband, jacob, the man she said she wanted to kill, asked the judge to lighten her sentence. Forgive my wife for all she has done in this act of hatred. For this, she has been a wonderful person. Reporter: Merfeld was caught on tape, making a deal with a man she thought was a hitman for hire. It turns out, he was an undercover cop. You can do it painlessly. Reporter: She planned to pay for the murder by recovering her husband's $400,000 life insurance policy. For her, this was just as easy as getting a divorce. To me, that makes her very dangerous. I would be very concerned if i were her husband. I understand that just because I don't want to go to prison doesn't mean that i should not go. Reporter: Merfeld was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison, with a maximum of 20 years. There's crimes that i attempted, could have carried out. And that alone, honestly, is the worst punishment anyone should ever have to endure. And I will endure it for the rest of my life, every, single day. Reporter: She will stay in jail, which could have been worse, if it was not for the giveness of the man she wanted to kill. Her husband asked for no jail time at all.
