Transcript for Girls Battle for 'Prettiest' Title in Online Beauty Contests
Reporter: There are no crowns in this beauty contest. The winner gets to call herself the prettiest of the bunch and the losers, well, this is what they get. A big red "x expect over their faces. They're so young we can't show you those faces but here's how it works. They post their photos on social media sites like instagram. Just about anyone, even strangers can vote anonymously choosing the cutest of the group. This pageant with a mean girls twist is all the rage. We asked which of these massachusetts high school students has come across the trend, the response, every single one of them. It was almost entirely all girls posting and the ones that had the most likes were girls who were wearing like pretty skimpy tight low cut things. Yeah. Reporter: So why would a girl willingly subject herself to this? Every girl wants to know what other people think of her. There is no app, there is no software that is going to take away the anxiety. That is part of growing up. Reporter: In a statement instagram said parents should monitor their kids online and, yet, we continue to invest heavily in providing robust tools that the instagram community can use to report inappropriate content so that we can review it and take action" but seeing children so vulnerable online worries parents. Holly agoman becker said her 10-year-old inadvertently ended up in a cyberbeauty pageant after somebody else posted her photo will. It hits you in the gut like why is this happening. Reporter: These girls may live in a digital era but they want nothing to do with cyberbeauty contests. They say they are simply too cruel. If I got one x it would ruin my self-confidence. Reporter: For "good morning america," cecilia vega, abc news, los angeles. It is so scary. You have to monitor every single thing your children are doing online. I wish there were a way to stop it. Being a preteen wasn't hard enough. No real way to seven for your kid because you don't know who could post their picture unless you were to look through every one. That is why communication is key and making sure you're parenting them and, you know, hopefully protecting them.
