new accusations the united states has been spying on one of its closest allies. The german foreign minister has called in the american ambassador over suspicious -- over suspicions that the u.S. Has been monitoring the phone calls of the german leader, chancellor merkel. Abc's martha raddatz has been tracking it and has the latest from washington this morning. Good morning, martha. Reporter: Good morning, robin. You can imagine the outrage there would be if the u.S. Suspected an ally was tapping into president obama's phone. That's how the germans feel this morning. Chancellor merkel spends a lot of time on her cell phone. In official meetings. With movie stars. And on the go. But what she says and what she texts are assumed to be private, which is why these accusations have sparked headlines around the world this morning. Furious german officials, saying they have received information that the chancellor's cell phone may be monitored by american intelligence. Sensing the seriousness, president obama was in touch with merkel almost immediately. I can tell you that the president assured the chancellor that the united states is not monitoring and will not monitor the communications of the chancellor. Reporter: But notice that the white house spokesman carefully said the u.S. Is not monitoring and will not monitor the chancellor. He refused to say whether she has been monitored in the past. This comes after an uproar in france, with reports that the nsa swept up more than 70 million french phone calls in just a month, which the u.S. Calls misleading. And in mexico and brazil, investigations have been launched after reports that high-ranking officials have been tracked by the u.S. Almost all of the reports of spyispy ing are based on leaks from former nsa contractor, edward snowden. These revelations will be a big topic today at a european union summit in brussels. Merkel will be there, along with the french president. George? Martha, thanks very much.
