Cecelilia vega has the story. Reporter: He had been so candid about his battle with cancer. Sparing almost no details like in this sitdown. I had a sore throat. Got a biopsy. Analyzed it. A stage four. It's intense. Reporter: Fresh off his emmy win for "behind the candleabra" he has a confession. He reveals it with us not throat cancer but tongue cancer. I put the tongue. I saw the look in his eye. I went, oh. Reporter: As part of male cancer awareness week, he spoke with samuel l. Jackson on "this morning." He was about to start promoting his movie when he got the diagnosis. You can't cancer a worldwide european tour. I said, we have to come out. Most people, including producers and studios may not be too happy to hire an actor or actress with a -- tongue cancer. Reporter: He says his doctor told him to lie. You want to know why? If we have to do surgery, it won't be pretty. You lose part of your tongue, your jaw. All that stuff. Reporter: He never did need the surgery. After aggressive radiation and chemotherapy, the 69-year-old says he has a clean bill of health. And with my type of cancer, if you're clean after two years, there's a 95% chance it is not coming back. It's not coming back. Not coming back.
