Transcript for Nick Cannon Sparks Whiteface Controversy
Turn to nick cannon who today is under fire for posting this photo of himself. A photo of him in whiteface. Some are calling this racist but cannon is defending himself and ABC's Mara schiavocampo has the story. Reporter: Though it's hard to tell this instagram picture is of nick cannon and, yes, he's in whiteface. The rapper and TV host posted the photo Monday with the caption "It's official, I'm white." Followed by a string of hashtags seeming to reference stereotypes about white people including beer pong, farmers markets and fist pumping all to promote his new album "White people party music." By seeing him do that puts the album title in your head, so it's actually a very smart move even though it may offend some people. Reporter: Some tweeters found the post funny tweeting things like, welcome to being white @nickcannon but others called it racially insensitive and not much different from Julianne hough's costume where she wore blackface as crazy sighs from "Orange is the new black." There's a double standard there so I can't say, oh, nick cannon, this is funny. I am offended by it. Reporter: Since his original post he has doubled down posting a new video of a different caucasian character along with the original guy. Good, bro. Reporter: This youtube video -- Top of the morning to you. Reporter: With the caption, funny, no one got mad when we did this. Cannon's album, his first in 11 years comes out on April 1st. ? Reporter: Some wonder if this could be an elaborate April fools' joke, a possible promotional prank that not everyone finds funny. For "Good morning America," Mara schiavocampo, ABC news, new York. A promotional prank? Lively discussion out here. It certainly did. Yeah. We can continue that later in the program. Oh, you don't want to share -- if you're going to have -- if you're going to be offended because of blackface, you do this, yes, people will be upset and rightfully so. You can't -- even though there's more historical -- there's more history behind -- That's what I was thinking. Historical perspective and it's a question of power here, as well. I give you that but at the very least poor taste. Yes. At the very least. Gravity on both sides. Oh, you guys are really talking. Oh. Yeah, ginger. Always getting this.
