Transcript for Santorum Surging Ahead of Romney in Michigan
We're gonna turn out of big shake up on the campaign trail new poll showing Rick Santorum surging ahead of Mitt Romney an epic battles taking shape in Mitt Romney's home state of Michigan. The big question now -- lost -- cost Romney the nomination. It's your voice your vote with our political analyst Matthew -- who like -- grew up in -- got a lot of expertise -- -- straight -- Thanks for joining us this morning and -- Romney sure is treating this. Like a must win state some staggering figures he and his allies are spending about two million dollars. On TV and radio to forty -- thousand dollars for Rick Santorum almost fifty to one. What happens if Romney loses in Michigan. This is a huge crucial moment I think it's actually the most important moment for Romney in this entire campaign up until now it's going to be -- -- moment is can he stop Rick Santorum like he stopped everybody else like he's got Newt Gingrich. Like -- -- all the other candidates if Rick Santorum wins this I think what we're gonna have is a new front runner for the first time in this race. Come after the Michigan primary going into Super Tuesday. It is eight unbelievably important moment for Mitt Romney in his home state if he loses it's a much different. Race and clearly they are taking incredibly serious said targets and army officials. Yesterday they're banking on what they believe is if they expose. Rick santorum's record the way they did to Newt Gingrich particular questions about his voting record. I in congress he will go down once people know the record but there's also a risk here. It's gonna backfire without among Republican voters they see -- training his fire on every single challenger the pops up. Yeah I mean that's the thing and I don't think he's going to be as easy to take down as Newt Gingrich who as you know had a lot more baggage than than Rick Santorum of. This is -- like a whack a -- tournament and every time somebody pops up Mitt Romney is able to whack him back down even somebody tells -- that pops up. Rick Santorum if he gets through this and wins this. He's gonna demonstrate he's not like every other mall in this race. That Mitt Romney's been able to whack. Anything does that we're getting there dual front runners are brand new front right. In this race story I think I think that's right at the same time Rick Santorum doesn't have anywhere near the money -- -- does he's not even on the ballot. In the state of Virginia not on the ballot get. In the state of Indiana so it's hard to see how he could actually get all the votes he needs to get the nomination. Sarah Palin's talking about the possibility of -- no one going to convention with enough votes to -- this thing up a contested convention. Yet we can for the first time in a long long time we can have a convention is basically is undecided we go into an exciting convention. I don't know -- it helps the Republicans. But it would be a -- -- -- new dynamic again I think Michigan sets the tone for the rest the race is really important for everybody involved but most important for Mitt Romney payment thanks very much.
