Some high drama on the treats of san diego. A rogue driver led police on what seemed like a never-ending chase until it ended in a hail of bullets. This morning, staggering video of a traffic stop gone terribly wrong. It's going to be shots fired over there. Reporter: Four police officers opened fire on a 40-year-old man inside this car in a san diego neighborhood. The incident started about an hour earlier when police reportedly pulled the man over for talking on his cell phone while driving. That's when they say he fled leading them on a high-speed chase. Turn around and go block off a side street. Reporter: The driver eventually slows letting a female passenger out of the car. Police laid down another spike strip and seemed like the end but then the barrage of gunfire. Unloaded on him. Reporter: Overnigh san diego police told abc news the officers only opened fire after the suspect raised a gun. Fearing for their safety. The safety of the public and the safety of other officers. The suspect did survive. He is in the hospital in critical condition and, of course, we will have an update as news becomes available.
