Reporter: Howard adams is not only the top prosecutor in northern california's sutter county, he's the past president of the state district attorney's association. This morning, one of the COUNTRY'S VETERAN D.A.s FINDS Himself on the other side of the law, investigated by the california attorney general, in a bizarre case of possible arson. Fueled by jealousy. Whether mr. Adams was involved in this crime or whether he is innocent, the appearance of impor prit, is putting this office on notice. Reporter: She wasn't home. But the blaze was ruled suspicious. Investigators began suspicious themselves after adam, who is also a former instructor at california's fire marshal office, became interested in the case, even showing up at the crime scene the next day. He seemed upset about the house fire. And the fact that he just forked out a few thousand dollar for furniture for her. And they had just gone up in flames or were destroyed. Reporter: Court records suggest that adams' interest was more than professional. She admitted to having affairs with a married d.A., As well as two other men. And she showed texts from adams, telling her he was jealous. In court records, adams denied the relationship until confronted with garibay's phone records. Adams said, quote, he had nothing to do with the arson. And the personal part of this is just that, personal. Garibay refused to comment. But told these newspapers she did have an inappropriate romantic relationship with adams, but does not believe he is responsible for the fire. Meantime, adams has not been charged with a crime.
