Oct. 23, 2008 -- Question: What is relaxation training, and is it a good option for managing stress faced by people with autism?

Answer: Research demonstrates that relaxation training and other cognitive behavior interventions can be helpful in reducing stress and anxiety in children who have anxiety disorders. Research studies are currently underway at our university and other universities to determine if these interventions designed for children with anxiety disorders can also be helpful for children who have autism. Children with autism are often very anxious and distressed by situations or experiences that most children can tolerate.
