Answer: Laryngitis refers to inflammation of the larynx or voice box. Typically the causes of laryngitis are not serious. Laryngitis is typically caused by a virus, and in rare occasions is caused by a bacteria or fungus.

Remedies to restore your voice include rest, steam from a humidifier or a hot steam bath will typically restore your voice in short order. If you have a prolonged episode of laryngitis lasting more than two to three weeks, you should consult your physician for further evaluation.
