Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Pa.

My name is Dr. Lorraine Levitt Katz and I am a pediatric endocrinologist at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

My interest is childhood diabetes. I am the principle investigator at CHOP for the STOPP-T2D Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth (TODAY) study, the NIH-sponsored multi-center study that will define the optimal treatment strategies for youth with new onset type 2 diabetes mellitus. We are presently recruiting youth ages 10-17 with type 2 diabetes to participate in this exciting trial.

I am also the CHOP principal investigator for Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet, an NIH-sponsored multicenter study. TrialNet is a network of centers dedicated to the study, prevention, and early treatment of type 1 diabetes. We look at family members of individuals with type 1 diabetes to understand the role of genetics and diabetes prevention.

I am also the Associate Director of the CHOP Clinical Translational Research Center. Here, my research includes a model to distinguish pediatric type 2 diabetes from type 1 diabetes and I am also conducting a longitudinal follow-up study of markers of insulin secretion in children with type 2 diabetes.

Additional ongoing research trials underway at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Diabetes Center for Children are designed to delay the progression of type 1 diabetes in new onset patients.
