April 3 -- (HealthDay News) -- Yeast infections are quite common -- as many as three in four women will have them, and half of women have more than one yeast infection in their lives.

These infections usually aren't serious and can be treated with over-the-counter medication.

If you've never had a yeast infection before, see a doctor to be sure it's nothing more serious. The American Academy of Family Physicians offers this list of typical symptoms:

  • An itching or burning sensation inside the vagina and the surrounding skin.
  • Vaginal discharge that is white and may have the consistency of cottage cheese.
  • Painful intercourse.
  • Swollen skin around the outside of the vagina.
