Graphic Cigarette Packaging May Deter Smokers
A proposed graphic health warning for cigarette packages and advertisements depicts a smoker who has a surgically created hole in his throat called a stoma -- a common consequence of throat cancer surgery. The new package warnings are part of a U.S. Food and Drug Administration proposal under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act that would require that cigarette packages and advertisements have larger and more visible graphic health warnings.
