Christopher D. Saudek, M.D., Consultant for the ABC News OnCall+ Diabetes Center

— -- Dr. Christopher D. Saudek graduated from Harvard College and Cornell University Medical College, training in internal medicine in metabolism at Harvard Medical School. He served on the faculty at Cornell for eight years before joining the faculty of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he is currently the Hugh P. McCormick Family Professor of Medicine, Director of the Johns Hopkins Diabetes Center and Program Director of the General Clinical Research Center (GCRC).

At Johns Hopkins, Dr. Saudek teaches students at all levels. He sees patients regularly, and lectures on various aspects of diabetes. With a nurse educator and behaviorist, he authored "The Johns Hopkins Guide to Diabetes: for Today and Tomorrow." His research interests have varied and include early description of hemoglobin A1c as an index of blood glucose control, development of the implantable insulin pump, and principal investigator of the federally funded Diabetes Prevention Program. He has been program director of the Hopkins General Clinical Research Center, is principal investigator of a training grant in diabetes and endocrinology at Hopkins, and has been continuously funded by the NIH for more than 30 years.

Dr. Saudek is active in professional organizations. He was president of the American Diabetes Association in '01-'02, and was the ADA Outstanding Clinician in 1990. He has been on various national boards and has served on editorial boards. In his spare time, he is enthusiastic about sailing, squash, clarinet and family (not in that order).
