PARENTING-NEW TECHNOLOGY

NEW YORK — Janell Burley Hofmann honored her 13-year-old son's "maturity and growth" at Christmas with his first iPhone, but it came with strings attached. Eighteen strings, to be exact, in a written code of conduct that placed the mommy blogger at the center of the debate over how parents should handle technology in the hands of their teens, especially younger ones just entering the frenetic world of social networks and smartphones. FOOD-UNHAPPY HOURS

At "happy hour" in the Summer Winter bar in Burlington, Mass., you'll get bivalves not brews. That's because Massachusetts passed a law in 1984 banning bars from offering cut-price drinks, so director of food and beverage James Flaherty draws customers in with shellfish specials. FOOD-DRINKING ON A DIET

The first rule of drinking on a diet is, don't. Surely you saw the recent study that found that Americans were getting almost as many empty calories from alcohol as from soft drinks. The second rule of drinking on a diet is that since you probably will ignore Rule No. 1, find a way to enjoy alcohol without letting it swamp your healthy intentions. By Michelle Locke.

MYANMAR

YANGON, Myanmar — President Obama recently became the first sitting U.S. president to visit Myanmar, but he's hardly the only American here these days. The country has become increasingly open to tourism in the past few years and well-traveled types who've already been around the globe a few times have been flocking here, excited to discover a place lost in time where there isn't even a Starbucks (yet).
