IMF Chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn's Presidential Election Chances Called Into Question in France

France Closely Watching Strauss-Kahn Arrest

Political allies have also sought to defend Strauss-Kahn by saying the manner in which the news of his arrest was leaked in France points to a conspiracy. A young UMP supporter named Jonathan Piney was the first to tweet news of the arrest Sunday, writing (translated from French), "a friend in the United States just told me that #DSK was arrested by police at a hotel in NYC an hour ago."

Since then, French Twitter has been filled with tweets from people who say that the news was reported first by a UMP supporter points to a wide conspiracy to discredit Strauss-Kahn.

"The situation is still very fluid, we don't know what will happen," Virot of Liberation.

A New York City judge denied bail to Strauss-Kahn today before sending him to jail until Friday, calling him a flight risk despite arguments to the contrary by his high-powered defense team.
