— -- London's iconic red phone boxes are going green, literally.

The telephone booths, which have long made virtually obsolete by cell phones, are being converted to solar-powered cell phone charging stations, according to the BBC.

And that includes a new coat of green paint.

The task to convert all of London's 8,000 telephone booths is spearheaded by entrepreneurs Harold Craston and Kirsty Kenny

"I lived next to a phone box in my second year at uni and walked past it every day," Craston explained to the BBC.

"I thought, 'There are 8,000 of these lying unused in London and we must be able to find a use for them,'" he said.

A converted booth, called a "solarbox" can charge up to 100 phones a day. The station comes equipped with chargers for a number of cell phone devices.
