Each year thousands attend the Festa Confederada, or Confederate Party, in Santa Barbara d’Oeste, Brazil. The festival is put on by Brazilian descendants of thousands of families who were part of the Confederate States during the United States Civil War, then emigrated to Brazil, often to the area in the nearby region of São Paulo. The festival features Southern-style dancing, music and cuisine. Organizers say they are celebrating tradition and ancestral heritage, not the negative connotations of the Confederacy. They say the Confederate flag carries no stigma or political meaning in Brazil.
