The Kabashi family fled their home in Darfur in 2004 after the Janjaweed militia attacked and burned their village. They escaped to a refugee camp in Kenya, where their infant son died of starvation. Then they fled to the slums of Nairobi (shown here), where they were living with no money or food. Lana Kabashi, 25, is pregnant with their son Hakim in this photo, taken just before they were rescued by Mapendo International, a Cambridge, Mass.-based relief group.
