This hand out image made available by AVRO Tuesday Sept. 30, 2008, shows an unknown work by Pieter Breughel the younger . A Dutch television program said Tuesday it has uncovered a previously unknown work by the 17th-century painter. The circular painting, 17 centimeters (6.7 inches) in diameter, portrays a farmer and his wife resting against a tree after harvesting, and is estimated to be worth around euro100,000 (US$143,000). The program, called "Between Art & Kitch," lets amateur collectors can have their pieces examined by an expert appraiser. Spokesman Rob Schwitters said the owner was a woman who bought the painting from an antiques dealer in 1950 for 100 guilders, around euro650 (US$925) in today's money. (AP Photo/ AVRO, HO)

A previously unknown work by 17th-century painter Pieter Brueghel the Younger has been discovered in an elderly woman's possessions, a Dutch art television program announced Tuesday.
The small, circular painting — 6.7 inches (17 centimeters) in diameter — portrays a farmer and his wife resting against a tree, and is estimated to be worth around euro100,000 ($143,000), the program "Between Art & Kitsch" said.
The owner bought the painting from an antiques dealer in 1950 for 100 guilders, around euro650 ($925) in today's money, program spokesman Rob Schwitters said.
The painting, dated to approximately 1620, also bears Brueghel's signature on the trunk of the tree.
The Dutch television program lets amateur collectors have their trinkets examined and valued by an expert appraiser.
John Hoogsteder, an expert who runs a well-known art dealership in The Hague and has seen the painting, said it was not hard to determine its authenticity.
"Because of the raised paint, which is caused by the contraction of the wooden panel, I'm convinced that it's an original from that time," he said.
