Greek Extremist Shootout Triggers Mass Search

Police say they have searched homes across Athens and questioned more than 20 people in a hunt for members of a far-left armed group following the arrest of one of its leaders in a central Athens shootout.

Searches continued across the Greek capital Thursday, a day after the arrest of Nikos Maziotis, a leading Revolutionary Struggle member, in the shootout that left the suspect, two tourists and one police officer injured. Maziotis was convicted in absentia of terrorism last year.

Police said a 9-milimeter handgun used by Maziotis did not match weapons used in past criminal or terrorist attacks.

Far-left and anarchist militant groups have carried out bombings and shootings for decades in Greece. Other fugitives, identified by authorities, include Maziotis' 45-year-old wife Panagiota Roupa.
