— Aug. 6, 2014 -- Ohio police are trying to find the owner of more than $1,000 in bills found fluttering along a busy highway.

The mystery cash was spotted by a motorist on the westbound lanes of the Ohio Turnpike about 10 p.m. Tuesday night. The driver pulled over and began collecting the money and was joined by an off-duty police officer. The money was found in Hiram, a town east of Cleveland.

“We hope to return the money to rightful owner,” Sgt. Darren Huggins of the Ohio State Highway Patrol told ABC News today.

Huggins said more than $1,000 worth of cash in different bills, including hundred dollar bills, was loosely scattered on the side of the road and collected. An exact amount was not determined.

"I really can't say at this point because it is an ongoing investigation but there is a substantial amount," Huggins said.

He said the money may belong to a forgetful trucker.

"We have a lot of truck traffic here, and occasionally truckers leave their belongings on the vehicle, so it possibly could have fallen off the vehicle," he said.

Officials did not identify the motorist who found the money.
