American family turns grief into aid for children in war-torn Uganda.

At the Awach IDP, an image far too familiar in Uganda -- children taking care of other children.
Here, a naked child runs between the thatched huts. Many of these tiny huts hold large and growing families.
Uganda is approximately the size of Oregon, and it has a population of about 26 million people. In internally displaced person's camps, also known as IDP camps, there are about 1.7 million people. Here's a child at the Awach IDP Camp.
As part of her chores, this girl pumps water from a well inside Awach.
Even with their clothing in tatters and their malnourished bodies caked with dirt, children take pleasure in posing for the cameras.

While most countries advertise weight loss , Ugandans advertise weight gain. These signs were everywhere in Kampala.

Flavia, a patient at the Peter C. Alderman Clinic in Gulu, cleans her clothes alongside other schoolmates at the Laroo Boarding School for War Affected Children in Gulu . The foundation was created in the name of Peter C. Alderman to train mental health workers and open clinics in war-torn countries.
