W A S H I N G T O N, August 2 -- Tonight's broadcast will focus on the current situation in the Middle East. The Israelis have a policy of targeting those people that they believe are responsible for the bombings and other attacks. They call this anti-terrorism, while the Palestinians call it assassination. It's all semantics as the violence continues.

Avraham Burg is the Speaker of the Knesset, the Israeli parliament. He has been a member of the Knesset for 13 years and was previously an adviser to now foreign minister Shimon Peres. Burg is a leading candidate for chairmanship of Israel's left-leaning Labor party when it holds its elections in October.

Martin Indyk was the American ambassador to Israel until two weeks ago (July 16). We're interrupting his much-needed vacation that following two tours as the American ambassador to Israel and one as the Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs. When he returns to Washington, Indyk will begin his new life as a Senior Fellow for Middle East Affairs at the Brookings Institute.
