W A S H I N G T O N,  Dec. 15 -- The last five weeks have been a roller coaster ride for all Americans. No matter where you fall on the political spectrum, there have been days of celebration and disappointment.

For those of us in the press it has been a grueling sprint, with so many surprising twists and turns. For the campaign staffers, it has been even more grueling, with the days of celebration and disappointment even more acute.

But what has it been like for the people truly in the eye of this hurricane, the candidates themselves? For Joseph Lieberman, a long-shot contender for running mate last summer, the past several months, not to mention the past several weeks, must have been a long, strange trip, indeed.

Tonight Ted Koppel will talk to Connecticut Sen. Lieberman. No longer a running mate, no longer a possible vice president-elect. Strictly senator.

One note: we are taping the broadcast in a few minutes, so that Sen. Lieberman, who, as the whole country now knows, is an observant Orthodox Jew, can be home for sundown and the beginning of Shabbat. On Shabbat, Jews take time to pray, to be with family, and to reflect on the week. Hell begin reflecting on this unusual week with us.

We hope youll be there, too.
