Jesse Jackson Jr.'s office confirms ‘more serious' health situation

The office of Illinois Democratic Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. announced in a statement Thursday that the congressman is at an "in-patient medical facility" and his undisclosed condition is "more serious" than originally assumed.

"Congressman Jackson's medical condition is more serious than we thought and initially believed," the statement read. "Recently, we have been made aware that he has grappled with certain physical and emotional ailments privately for a long period of time."

His office stated that "extended in-patient treatment as well as continuing medical treatment thereafter" is expected.

Jackson's office first revealed June 25 that the congressman had been on a "medical leave of absence" for exhaustion since June 10. It gave no additional details regarding his condition or a timeline for his return.
