Sonia Sotomayor was born June 25, 1954, in the Bronx, N.Y., and raised in the Bronxdale housing project. Her parents came to New York from Puerto Rico during World War II. Sotomayor's mother was a nurse; her father was a tool-and-die maker. In introducing his Supreme Court pick, President Obama credited Sotomayor's parents with sharing "a willingness to work hard, a strong sense of family and a belief in the American dream."
