August 19, 2008— -- As Sen. Joe Biden was leaving his house in Wilmington, Del., Tuesday afternoon (with a set of golf clubs in tow), he slowed down and said to the gathered news reporters outside his home: "Hey guys: I'm not the guy. See ya," reports ABC's Z. Byron Wolf.

Members of the news media were camped outside of Biden's home on Tuesday as speculation mounted as to whether Sen. Barack Obama was going to tap his former presidential rival to be his running mate later this week.

A Biden associate who spoke with ABC News after the senator made his remarks to reporters was not aware of the VP prospect having had any conversations with the Obama camp on Tuesday.

Bottom line: Biden's comments to the assembled reporters may have simply been the Delaware Democrat talking about the VP nomination the way he has spoken about it throughout this process -- with humility and looking to throw reporters off the scent.

And, of course, "I'm not the guy," is almost certainly true right now no matter what.
