— -- President Bill Clinton made a speech that took a veiled swipe at Donald Trump, only uttering his name once today in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

In recent weeks, Trump has made it clear that he plans to attack the former president from the podium and online about his personal life. Clinton, though, has shied away from retaliating in the same way but has opted for a more veiled approached.

"When people practice the politics of personal destruction, it works, until it doesn’t,” said Clinton. “And once people start thinking about, who’s going to be the president? Who’s going to make these decisions? Who’s spent a lifetime serving other people?” A person in the crowd shouted, “Hillary!”

Clinton said he was not even considered a factor in the California primary when he ran two decades ago and was smeared by Republicans.

President Clinton has said that Trump’s attacks have not shaken him and that neither he nor Hillary Clinton will resort to personal attacks. But today during his wife’s national security speech, she relentlessly attacked the GOP nominee.

"Donald Trump's ideas aren't just different. They are dangerously incoherent. They're not even really ideas. Just a series of bizarre rants, personal feuds and outright lies. He is not just unprepared,” said Hillary Clinton. “He is temperamentally unfit to hold an office that requires knowledge, stability and immense responsibility.”

When President Clinton was asked about why the tone on Trump has started to shift, he said he believes his wife’s speech “speaks for itself.”
