Franklin D. Roosevelt started collecting stamps at an early age and designed them for the U.S. Postal Service. For the stamp at left, a citizen had asked him to create a stamp for Mother's Day. He obliged, and after some small tweaks by the postmaster general, the stamp was ready for Mother's Day 1934. (Basic Books)
