Political Scandals
U.S. Rep. Vito Fossella, R-N.Y., a married father of three, acknowledged that he fathered a child from an extramarital affair. He made the disclosure during a May 8, 2008, news conference about a recent arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol in Virginia. "My personal failings and imperfections have caused enormous pain to the people I love, and I am truly sorry," said the representative for Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn, N.Y. Word of a "love child" first surfaced after Fossella reportedly told police during the DWI stop that he was on his way to visit a sick daughter. In December, Fossella was sentenced to five days in jail for the DWI arrest. Fossella did not seek re-election in November 2008.
