Rosalyn Carter was born in Plains, Ga. When she was 13, her father died of leukemia, and as the oldest of four children, she helped her mother raise her siblings as well as assist in the dressmaking business. As first lady, she attended Cabinet meetings and major briefings, and served as President Jimmy Carter's personal emissary to Latin America. She was also a strong advocate of mental health programs, and from 1977 to 1978, she served as the honorary chairwoman of the president's commission on health. (AP Photo)
