Transcript for Sens. McCain, Graham Blast Rand Paul's Filibuster
The Wall Street Journal reads quote give Rand Paul credit for theatrical timing. As a snowstorm descended on Washington and the Kentucky Republicans old fashioned filibuster Wednesday. Feel the attention -- on Twitter. And cable TV. If only his reasoning matched the showmanship. Senator Paul's got a lot of passion that's a great thing in have all the passion walk this is an important issue we should be talking about it. I'll welcome a reasoned discussion. But to my Republican colleagues I don't remembering -- -- coming down here suggesting that President Bush was gonna kill anybody with a prompt. But as a hypothetical. Constitutional matter. Mr. holder acknowledged the president can authorize the use of lethal military force. Within US territory. The shocked senator Paul who invoke the constitution and Miranda rights. Under current US policy. Mr. Paul mused on the floor Jane Fonda. Could have been legally killed by -- hellfire missile. During her tour of Communist Hanoi. In 1970 choose. So what is it all of a sudden. That this drone program. Has gotten every Republican so spun up. What are we up to here. But if mr. Paul wants to be taken seriously. He needs to do more than -- political stunts that fire up impressionable libertarian kids in their college dorms. He needs to know what he's talking about. People are astonished that President Obama Senator McCain is doing many of the things that President Bush did. I'm not astonished -- congratulated. Are having the good judgment to understand where war. But to somehow. To somehow -- litch. -- for error that the -- United States is gonna kill somebody. Like Jane Fonda or someone who disagrees with the policies. As it is a stretch of imagination. Which is frankly. Ridiculous. This. President. Is not -- -- use a drone against a non combatants sitting in a cafe anywhere in the United States. Nor will feature president's because that they do they -- committed an act of murder. Non combatants under the law of war are protected. Not subject to being killed -- randomly. So to suggest that the president. Won't answer that question. Somehow legitimizes. That the drone program. Is gonna result in being used against anybody in this room having a cup of coffee. To me cheapens the debate. We've done. I think. A disservice to a lot of Americans by making them believe that somehow. They -- in danger from their government they are not. But we are in danger. We are in danger from a dedicated. Long standing. Easily replaceable leadership enemy that is hell bent on our destruction. And this leads us. Having to do things. That perhaps we haven't had to do and other more conventional. Wars.
