‘GMA’ Hits 5-Week Highs in Both Key Adult Demos

‘GMA’ is Only Morning Program to See Gains From Prior Week in Any Demo as CBS and NBC Turn in Losses

ABC News’ “Good Morning America” averaged 4.128 million Total Viewers, 1.366 million Adults 25-54 and 980,000 Adults 18-49 for the week of August 15, 2016, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research.

“GMA” scored week-to-week increases (3.986 million, 1.314 million and 925,000, respectively, for w/o 8/8/16) in all key target demos: Total Viewers (+4%), Adults 25-54 (+4%) and Adults 18-49 (+6%), hitting 5-week highs in both key adult demos – since w/o 7/11/16. In fact, “GMA” stood as the only morning program to see gains from the prior week in any demo as both “CBS This Morning” (-2%/-2%/-1%) and “Today” (-3%/-4%/-6%) turned in losses.

“GMA” narrowed its margins with “Today” by double digits in week 2 of the 2016 Summer Olympics versus week 1 in all key target demos: Total Viewers (-22% - 976,000 vs. 1.258 million), Adults 25-54 (-18% - 672,000 vs. 819,000) and Adults 18-49 (-21% - 574,000 vs. 727,000).

Comparing week 2 of the Summer Olympics in Rio versus week 2 in London (w/o 8/6/12), “GMA” also decreased its gaps with “Today” by double digits across the board: Total Viewers (-37% - 976,000 vs. 1.541 million), Adults 25-54 (-18% - 672,000 vs. 821,000) and Adults 18-49 (-23% - 574,000 vs. 749,000). For the 2nd week in a row, “GMA” delivered its smallest margins opposite a Summer Olympics-fueled “Today Show” in all 3 Nielsen measures since at least the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. (Note: “Today” did not air during the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona and the Nielsen electronic database started in September 1991).

Season to date, “GMA” stands as the No. 1 morning newscast in Total Viewers, beating “Today” by 157,000 (4.767 million vs. 4.610 million), taking the top spot at this point of the season for the 4th consecutive year.

During the week, “GMA” defeated “CBS This Morning” in Total Viewers (+29%/+932,000), Adults 25-54 (+53%/+471,000) and Adults 18-49 (+56%/+352,000).
