— -- Ten Australian athletes have been detained by Brazilian police for allegedly tampering with Olympic credentials, officials announced Friday night.

Olympic security officials confirmed to ABC News that the athletes are being questioned by Brazil's federal police about allegedly tampering with the credentials they received when they arrived at Olympic Park in Rio de Janeiro.

Fiona de Jong, chief executive of the Australian Olympic Committee, told reporters during a brief press conference Friday night, "Earlier this evening, a number of Australian athletes went to support their mates at the Australia versus Serbia [basketball] match. Ten of the Australian athletes didn't have accreditation to be in that part of the venue. The Brazilian authorities and us are working through the issues."

De Jong said of the athletes, who were being questioned at a police station near Olympic Park, "Nobody has been arrested or charged."

The athletes hail from various sports, including cycling, rugby and rowing.

Accreditation to the Olympics essentially serves as a visa to visit the country. The Brazilian Ministry of External Relations says on its website, "No Visa required, from May 5th to November 5th, 2016, regardless of nationality, for foreigners with Olympic Credentials."
