— -- Rick Barnes will need to make significant changes with the  Texas Longhorns if he wants to keep his job, a source confirmed to ESPN.com's Jeff Goodman on Thursday night.

Texas went one and done in the NCAA tournament after going 20-13 and 8-10 in the Big 12, and that has athletic director Steve Patterson wanting "to see improvement," a development first reported by t he Austin American-Statesman, which cited an unnamed source familiar with the situation.

If not, Patterson "will have to make a change," said the source, who declined to provide specifics as to what those changes should entail, such as new coaches or a new offensive scheme.

Barnes, whose base pay package this season was $2.55 million, according to the report, is coaching on a contract that expires in March 2019 after he signed an extension following last season.

A clause in the coach's contract calls for a $1.75 million buyout if he is fired before April 1, when the payout would decrease to $1.5 million, according to the Austin newspaper.

Texas entered the season riding high hopes with highly touted freshman Myles Turner aboard.

But the 7-footer, who averaged 10.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, wasn't a significant factor down the stretch for the Longhorns and was limited to 14 points total in their last four games, scoring two in 16 minutes of a 56-48 loss to Butler in a first-round NCAA tournament ouster.
