— -- Los Angeles Angels ace Garrett Richards has a torn ligament in his pitching elbow and is expected to need Tommy John surgery, according to ESPN's Michael Eaves and multiple reports.

Richards, 27, had already been scratched from his scheduled start Friday because of fatigue and dehydration.

The elbow tear was first reported Friday by Yahoo! Sports. If he undergoes the surgery, Richards would miss the rest of this season and a significant portion of next season.

Richards posted a 1-3 record this season with a 2.34 ERA over six starts.

Before the season, the Angels avoided arbitration with Richards by agreeing to a one-year deal worth $6.425 million.

Richards went 15-12 with a 3.65 ERA for the Angels last season. He also shined in 2014, his first year as a regular big league starter, as he went 13-4 with a 2.61 ERA before a season-ending knee injury.
