Art Briles says he'll stay at Baylor
— -- AUSTIN, Texas -- Art Briles made it official Friday: He's staying at Baylor.
In a statement released by the school, Briles announced he intends to remain with the Baylor program he led to a Big 12 championship in 2013.
"I have no desire to pursue other coaching positions," Briles said in the news release. "As I've said many times, I am both humbled and honored to be the head coach at Baylor University and believe we have something special going here.
"I look forward to leading the Bears onto the field next fall at McLane Stadium and defending our Big 12 championship that our players and coaches worked so hard to win this season."
Briles was a candidate for the Texas head-coaching job, and the Austin American-Statesmen reported this week that Briles would accept the position if offered.
Speculation had also surfaced that Briles could be a candidate for the Washington Redskins opening to reunite with former Bears quarterback Robert Griffin III.
Instead, he will remain in Waco, Texas, where the program will open the $260 million McLane Stadium in August. The on-campus stadium is one of several facility updates in the works for Baylor.
In Briles' six seasons as head coach, Baylor is 44-32. The Bears won a school-record 11 games in 2013, including an outright Big 12 title and a trip to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, where they were upset by No. 15 UCF 52-42 in their first-ever BCS bowl game.
Briles earned Big 12 coach of the year honors from the league, The Associated Press and Sporting News. He agreed to a contract extension through the 2023 season on Nov. 13.
"There is tremendous excitement for our program's future, and I look forward to many more great seasons at Baylor," Briles said. "There is tremendous commitment from our university leadership, athletic administration, coaches and student-athletes -- it truly is a great time to be a Baylor Bear."
Before releasing his statement, Briles posted the following on his Twitter account: "Contrary to reports and rumors I am a Baylor Bear -- 2013 Big 12 Champs."
