— -- Two days after throwing his best game of the season, New York Yankees starter CC Sabathia is headed to the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin.

Sabathia (2-2, 3.81 ERA) threw seven scoreless innings with six strikeouts against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday to help the Yankees snap a six-game losing streak. It was Sabathia's second scoreless outing since April 2013.

The move is retroactive to Thursday. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Friday that Sabathia is expected to miss about three weeks and that  Ivan Nova will replace Sabathia in the rotation. Sabathia initially felt the injury during the fourth inning of Wednesday's start against the Orioles, and an MRI revealed the groin strain.

The team called up Phil Coke from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take Sabathia's roster spot.

Coke was 2-0 in seven scoreless innings over one start and one relief appearance with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He was acquired by New York on April 26 from Lancaster of the independent Atlantic League. Coke pitched for the Yankees in 2008 and 2009, helping them win their last World Series title.

Sabathia joins designated hitter Alex Rodriguez on the disabled list. Rodriguez was put on the 15-day DL on Wednesday after he strained his right hamstring Tuesday against the Orioles.

Last-place New York is 9-17 and off to its worst start since 1991.
