— -- MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Kevin McHale begins his tenure as interim coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday when they host the Chicago Bulls. With the team badly underacheiving, the Timberwolves fired coach Flip Saunders on Saturday and named McHale, the vice president of basketball operations, coach for the remainder of the season. After reaching the Western Conference finals last season, Minnesota has not come close repeating that success this season, losing seven of its last eight to fall below .500 - 1 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Lakers for the eighth and final playoff spot. In what ended up being Saunders' final game, the Wolves committed 21 turnovers in a 100-82 loss to the Utah Jazz on Friday. Superstar Kevin Garnett was held to a season-low 12 points, leaving him two shy of 15,000 for his career. The Bulls have also been struggling, dropping four of their last five, including a 105-92 loss Wednesday to the Houston Rockets. Kirk Hinrich scored 16 points and Tyson Chandler added 12 and 20 rebounds for Chicago, which fell to 1-3 on its five-game road trip. The Bulls will be looking to complete their first sweep of the Wolves in eight seasons. Rookie Ben Gordon scored 16 of his season-high 31 points in the fourth quarter as Chicago snapped a 10-game losing streak to Minnesota with a 99-88 win on December 11 at the United Center. The Bulls have not won in the Target Center since a 112-102 triumph on January 15, 1997.
