No decision on Mike Munchak yet

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Mike Munchak spent time in Houston on Friday to discuss the future of the Tennessee Titans, but his future as the team's coach remains up in the air.

"I said all along that we would review every aspect of the football operations at the conclusion of the season -- in early January," team president and CEO Tommy Smith said in a statement. "Today I sat down with [GM] Ruston [Webster] and Mike and we discussed every coach and player on the roster. We had good discussions, but no final decisions were made."

Munchak is 22-26 in three years as the Titans' coach and is believed to have agreed to make some changes to his staff in order to stay on with the team.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame offensive lineman pulled off a surprising 9-7 season in 2011, but his teams have produced 6-10 and 7-9 seasons since, the second after a $100 million spending spree on free agents.

Munchak pledged to fans during training camp that they would not be disappointed and promised a run game that would be able to gain a tough yard, but he delivered neither.

If he's retained, it's unlikely he will get an extension. That would set up a lame-duck year, which could mean trouble attracting assistants and free agents because there would be no assurance Munchak would remain the team's coach beyond the 2014 season.

Smith became leader of a family ownership group shortly after the team's founder and Smith's father-in-law, Bud Adams, died in late October.

Webster said he's hopeful of a resolution soon.

"The three of us met all day today in Houston," Webster said in a statement. "We had a good conversation in regards to the team and moving forward. Nothing final has been decided at this point, but we hope to have a decision soon."
