— -- What appeared to be a slip by Johnny Manziel, posting his phone number on Twitter on Friday night, was in fact a prank on a friend, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

The backup Cleveland Browns quarterback posted the number of a buddy who was "bugging" him and tried to make it look like a slip of his own number, sources said.

The tweet just before 7 p.m. ET had only a 10-digit phone number, with an area code that includes San Antonio and Kerrville, Texas, where Manziel is from.

Manziel left the number on Twitter for about five minutes before deleting it. The number was retweeted more than 300 times in less than 30 seconds.

His friend was inundated with phone calls, and just more than an hour after the number was posted, the mailbox for the number was full.

ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen and ESPN Cleveland Browns reporter Pat McManamon contributed to this report.
