— -- Toronto Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle has received a two-year contract extension, the team announced Thursday.

There had been speculation about Carlyle's future after the Maple Leafs missed the playoffs in spectacular fashion, losing 12 of their final 14 games.

"In Randy we know we have a leader who has enjoyed a high level of success as both a player and a coach, including a Stanley Cup championship," general manager David Nonis said in a statement. "It was important that the positives Randy brings to our team were not overshadowed by a finish to the season that we all must take responsibility for."

Assistant coaches Dave Farrish, Scott Gordon and Greg Cronin will not return to the team.

Carlyle won the Stanley Cup as Anaheim's coach in 2006-07.
