— -- NEW YORK -- The Mets picked up a win Wednesday, but it could prove very costly.

Starter Noah Syndergaard was pulled from the game with elbow discomfort. Slugger Yoenis Cespedes left with what the Mets described as left wrist discomfort.

Both were dispatched to the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan to see Dr. David Altchek, the team said after its 4-3 win against the Royals.

Syndergaard threw 91 pitches over six innings before exiting. He picked up the win, allowing three runs on eight hits.

Cespedes, meanwhile, grimaced in the bottom of the fifth inning on at least one of the four pitches that he fouled off during a plate appearance against Royals left-hander Danny Duffy that ultimately ended in a walk. He was checked at first base by trainer Ray Ramirez and manager Terry Collins.

Alejandro De Aza replaced Cespedes in center field when the Mets returned to the field in the top of the sixth.

Cespedes had been 2-for-2 with a double and a walk before his departure. He is hitting .383 (18-for-47) over his last 13 games, which followed an 11-game stretch during which he went 3-for-35.

The Mets have suffered an inordinate amount of injuries of late. Bartolo Colon departed Tuesday's game after four pitches when he was struck with a comebacker. Colon was diagnosed with a bruised right thumb and the Mets are optimistic he can make his next start on Sunday against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field.
