Packers release Brandon Bostick
— -- GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Brandon Bostick won't get the chance to atone for his mistake in the NFC Championship Game, at least not with the Green Bay Packers.
The backup tight end was released on Monday, a source confirmed to ESPN, after Bostick tweeted that his time in Green Bay was over.
Bostick played a role in the Packers' crushing overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC title game. With just over two minutes left and the Packers holding a 19-14 lead, Bostick tried to recover an onside kick and let the ball slip through his hands. The Seahawks recovered and scored the go-ahead touchdown.
Although the Packers tied the game before eventually losing in overtime, Bostick's mistake stood out as one of the most costly plays of the game. Had the Packers recovered, they might have been able to run out the clock and advanced to the Super Bowl.
Bostick wasn't even supposed to try to recover the onside kick but rather was supposed to block for sure-handed receiver Jordy Nelson, who had a clear path to the ball had Bostick not gotten in the way.
A day after the game, Bostick said he was "just trying to deal with this" and sounded hopeful he would get the chance to put it behind him. "I'll just move on from it, come back here and just work hard and just try to put that behind me," Bostick said on Jan. 19.
Bostick was once viewed as a promising prospect but caught only two passes (one was a touchdown) last season. He was under contract with the Packers through 2015 and would have been paid the third-year minimum of $585,000 had he made the team.
Bostick's release was the latest change the Packers have made since the NFC Championship Game. They fired special-teams coordinator Shawn Slocum, and coach Mike McCarthy restructured his offensive staff while also giving up play-calling duties.
