Cam Newton Suffers Fractures in His Back From Car Wreck

The 25-year-old has two fractures in his back, doctors say.

— -- Cam Newton, the quarterback of the Carolina Panthers, was involved in a car accident this afternoon and tests reveal that he has two fractures in his back.

Newton, 25, has two transverse process fractures in his lower back and will stay in the hospital overnight for observation though he may not return to the field immeidiately. Such fractures are painful and could limit his mobility.

The Charlotte-Mechlenburg Police Department confirmed that Newton was involved in a two-car collision and both he and the driver of the other car sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The accident took place on a bridge near a highway by Charlotte, according to ABC News' sister network ESPN.

The former Heisman Trophy winner was the first draft pick when he joined the NFL in 2011.

The Panthers released a statement via their Twitter feed about the accident, saying that Newton is in fair condition.
