Attempting to break gender roles and break out of her life as a 31-year-old waitress, Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) convinces boxing trainer Frank Dunn (Clint Eastwood) to take her on as a client. Dunn helps Fitzgerald fight her way up in the women's welterweight division, but a fateful blow in a Las Vegas match leaves the female boxer paralyzed from the neck down. The movie turns from the battle in the ring, to the greater battle of living one's life. The film won the 2004 Oscar for best picture, with a best acting nod for Hilary Swank.
